There are countless Norwegian bunads with different floral embroideries, and creating a knitting pattern that matches every single bunad is almost impossible.
In addition, not all embroidered flowers are suitable for stranded knitting and would need to be embroidered afterwards to achieve a good result.
Since flowers and leaves are recurring elements in most bunads, we have chosen to focus on creating a colourwork pattern where the colours complement the bunad, rather than reproducing the exact shape of each flower. This creates a harmonious overall look.
That is why we designed Maren as a universal cardigan pattern suitable for most bunads with floral embroidery. By simply changing the colours, you can create a cardigan that perfectly complements your own bunad.
To help you choose colours and place them within the colourwork pattern, we have created colour suggestions for a selection of Norwegian bunads.
This SUPPLEMENT (called TILLEGG, only in Norwegian) includes colour charts, colour codes, pattern diagrams and photos of the cardigan.
The SUPPLEMENT can be purchased here (Digital only):

Please note that you also need the Maren knitting pattern.
The black cardigan shown in this knitting pattern is photographed with the Rogaland Bunad (Jelsa embroidery), while the white cardigan is photographed with the Lundeby Bunad.
The pattern includes colour suggestions for:
- pink shades on a black background
- pink shades on a white background
The cardigan is worked top down, requiring very little finishing, and both the body and sleeves can easily be adjusted to your preferred length.
The fit is designed to be gently fitted across the shoulders and bust, while providing a more relaxed fit from the underarm down.
The sleeves are wide and worked without shaping, making them ideal for bunad shirts with full sleeves. The pattern features fitted cuffs.
Recommended yarn: Finull by Rauma
Here are just a few (out of many, many) examples of bunads that work beautifully with this pattern:
