CARDIGAN WITH PUFF SLEEVES
There are countless Norwegian bunads with different floral embroideries, and creating a knitting pattern that matches every single bunad is almost impossible.
In addition, not all embroidered flowers are suitable for stranded knitting and would need to be embroidered afterwards to achieve a good result.
Since flowers and leaves are recurring elements in most bunads, we have chosen to focus on creating a colourwork pattern where the colours complement the bunad, rather than reproducing the exact shape of each flower. This creates a harmonious overall look.
That is why we designed Ingrid, a universal cardigan with puff sleeves that is suitable for most bunads with floral embroidery. By simply changing the colours, you can create a cardigan that perfectly complements your own bunad.
To help you choose colours and place them within the colourwork pattern, we have created colour suggestions for a selection of Norwegian bunads.
This SUPPLEMENT (called TILLEGG, only in Norwegian) includes colour charts, colour codes, pattern diagrams and photos of the cardigan.
The TILLEGG can be purchased here (Digital only):

Please note that you also need the Ingrid knitting pattern.
The white cardigan shown in this knitting pattern is photographed with the Lundeby Bunad, while the black cardigan is photographed with a pink Beltestakk.
The pattern includes colour suggestions for:
- pink shades on a black background
- pink shades on a white background
The cardigan is worked in the round, from the top down. You begin with the body, then pick up stitches for the sleeves and front bands/neck edging before working the button bands last. This construction makes it easy to adjust the length of both the body and sleeves.
The cardigan is designed to have a gently fitted silhouette across the shoulders and upper back, while the wide ribbing provides a flattering close fit.
The large puff sleeves offer plenty of room for full bunad shirt sleeves and are finished with fitted cuffs.
The cardigan is designed to be fastened with a single brooch or a clasp, and is intended to be worn slightly open at the front so that both the bunad and the silver jewellery remain visible.
We recommend making the body approximately 5–6 cm (2–2½ inches) longer than the waistband of the bunad skirt.
Recommended yarn: Finull by Rauma
Here are just a few (out of many, many) examples of bunads that work beautifully with this pattern:
Rogaland Bunad, Beltestakk, Telemark Bunad, Lundeby Bunad, Løken Bunad, Gudbrandsdal Bunad, Lofoten Bunad, Nedre Buskerud Bunad, Romsdal Bunad, Rondastakk, Ofoten Bunad, Nordmøre Bunad, Oslo Bunad, Tranum Røer Bunad, Bardu and Målselv Bunad, Kystdrakten, Graffer Bunad, Halling Bunad, Maria Aasen Bunad, Ringerike Bunad, Jubilee Costume of Oslo, Oslo 1892 Bunad, Bergen Bunad, and many more.
